Network Monitor Software Set-up
Identifying
The Tap Point
Inspector performs network-level LAN/WAN
traffic
monitoring and analysis providing a comprehensive picture of
network security, performance and on-line user activity. Inspector
requires a networ
backbone tap point or monitoring port. The backbone switch or router is
the physical and logical point where all network traffic aggregates,
located just inside the firewall. To continuously monitor all inbound
and outbound network access and communications, the tap
point/monitoring port must have full visibility of all traffic. If
traffic is routed around or bypasses the tap location Inspector cannot
report on it.
The easiest method for
creating a tap point is by installing a flat network hub in between the
backbone switch/router and the firewall. The hub represents a single
collision domain on any port and creates a means to passively monitor
on inbound and outbound communications. Plug the switch uplink, the
firewall and Inspector box into the hub for a easy and effective
network monitor solution.
Below are network vendor instruction links for how to establish a
"network monitoring port."
